The Nansel pedigree spans over four continuous generations of ranching and livestock people. Grandpa Joe migrated to Montana from Nebraska at the turn of the century and settled in Treasure County. The Flying N Ranch was started by the Arlo Nansel family in 1953. It initially consisted of raising feed and registered Horned Herefords. From about 1960 until 1985 we raised, trained, showed, judged and sold Quarter and Appaloosa horses across the United States and Canada. In 1981 we became interested in Salers cattle. We purchased semen on Jumbo Jet and Jet and our first Salers calves arrived in the spring of 1982. This was our first experience with cross breeding and we immediately realized the benefits of heterosis and breed complementarity, in a cattle breeding operation! Thus, in 1989 we introduced black polled bulls into our program and began maximizing hybrid vigor in a Black Angus-Salers cross, which in present day terminology is called an Angus/Salers Composite or Optimizer. Having tested bulls at Midland Bull Test for numerous years, we began testing these composite bulls at Midland with most favorable results, notably receiving champion pen of three sire group overall average daily gain and in 1995, the low birth weight, high gaining bull, which now days is referred to as a “curve bender”. Our philosophy here at the Flying N is to produce efficient moderate- sized cattle that are easy fleshing and highly fertile. We like the Angus for their marbling ability, moderate frame size and their maternal and performance efficiency as far as fleshing ability. The Salers contribute calving ease, maternal strength, lean carcasses without excess external fat, big ribeyes, outstanding feed conversion in the feedlot and although their marbling scores are not as high as Angus they are at the top as far as Continental breeds. In conclusion, we strive to achieve and maintain a balance of traits in our cow herd and in the bulls we produce and market that will create maximum profit potential when used by cattlemen in their respective cow herds. |
